Wild Swimming

A favouirite wild swimming spot known as Cullever Steps is just downstream from a river crossing point after which the pool is named. Its a series of stepped pools in the East Okement River between Belstone and Okehampton Camp. The stones are near to where that river is joined by Black-a-ven Brook. Set within a natural amphitheatre with splendid views its a great place for a picnic and a short walk from parking. It does fall within the Military shooting range so look out for red flags flying meaning no access!

Black Rock Falls (aka Witch’s Pool) is a smaller pool but a beautiful walk form the carpark behind the Dartmoor Inn heading towards Widgery Cross. Keeping the hedge on your left you’ll walk to some fantastic large stepping stones and a bridge. You can storm up to the cross from here and on a clear day see both coasts! If you stay this side of the river and walk right along you will get to Witch’s Pool. Another great spot for wild swimming, it’s a deep plunge pool. Above it you can read a plaque in remembrance of a first world war hero and the poem about the very spot.
